I really like this guy that I recently met, but I am worried we may be too different. He is not only 5 years older than I am, but he also speaks very little English and a “whole lotta” Russian. A month and a half later, we have very strained, but wonderful daily conversations at out local coffee shop (where we met) but I wonder how I am going to get to know him on a deeper level when we often cannot find the right words to connect on anything deeper than “How was your day?” or “How is your school work coming?” Any tips?
It can be difficult to try to connect that speaks a different language than you. In fact, it can make it downright impossible..if you’re not very determined to make that connection. If it were simply a physical attraction on either side, you should have seen that by now. He is talking to you because he likes talking to you. It’s difficult to say if it’s anything more than friendship, but he feels a conversational connection, and that’s a good start.
Have you ever tried learning Russian? It is tough. Trust me, I’ve tried. However, if you have some ambition with this, and want to make a unique impression, try learning a few words and phrases. If anything, it’ll be good for a laugh and will make a nice ice breaker. Once you have broken the ice, try getting a little deeper with the conversation and see where it goes. If it just hovers at the friend level, you may have your answer…but if it goes further and there is a romantic spark, you’ll know that it’s just the language barrier you have to conquer. Then, with time, you learn a little Russian, he learns more English, and everyone wins in the end.
